SALEM'S LOT
Ever since I read Stephen King's 'From A Buick 8', I have been a big fan of his books. So much so, in fact, that I went on Amazon and ordered the majority of his back catalogue. 'From A Buick 8' was such a captivating story that, when I was reading it on holiday in Greece last year, I became so engrossed in it that I missed the first half of the England v France European Championship match and THAT is a rare occurrence.
Since then I have read 'Carrie' and 'The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon' and I have recently got my teeth into 'Salem's Lot' which is a tale about the taking over of a town by a group of vampires and the fight against them. After about 100 pages, the story was slowly beginning to unfold, the background was becoming clear and the rise of the vampire colony was taking shape. But how would it end? Would the town be saved by a rainshower of garlic, or sharp pointed stakes aimed at the vampires hearts? Would Ben Mears survive and save the love of his life from the evil clutches of the undead?
I don't have much time to watch television but the other Friday night I resisted the temptation to work in front of my computer and sat down instead with a hearty meal and the remote control. There didn't seem to be anything on so I left the television on a random channel while I did a bit of tidying up. Ten minutes later, I was sat there watching a story and a plot develop but I didn't know any of the characters names and from what I could make of it there had been a murder and there were suspects under investigation. As it turned out, I was watching one of the final parts of a film - the storyline was in its climax and there seemed to be a lot of blood but it was only when the adverts came on that I realised I was actually watching the movie version of Salem's Lot and I had just discovered the majority of what was going to happen in the book.
'Bloody typical' I muttered as I switched off the television and headed upstairs, it could have been any film in the history of film-making but no, it just had to be the film version of the book I was currently reading.
