I SMELL A RAT
Since moving house two months ago, it has been a pleasure not to have to deal with large spiders on the walls, woodlice in my bed and wasps nests in the rafters which I guess were all hazards of living on a farm in the middle of nowhere. The new flat is a pleasure - clean, damp-free and in the centre of town. Only I have a concern that we are not alone.
I don't mean that in any supernatural sense, there are no ghosts here, but I have a suspicion that something is living in the loft.
In the middle of the night when we first moved in, I was woken up by some frantic scrabbling around which was making a loud noise above the ceiling in my new bedroom. Ignoring that, I soon fell back to sleep and by the time the morning had come, I had forgotten about it.
Then there was the odd smell coming from somewhere in my room whenever I walked in the door. Despite leaving the windows open for days on end, the smell was still there. It can't have been the bedsheets or the pile of laundry - that all gets done on a regular basis. So what is that smell? It's a musty, stale smell, almost like urine. But it's occasional - it's not there all the time (and it's not down to my personal hygiene before you funny people start making comments) and besides which, it's quite faint and it's easily ignored.
But then I heard the scrabbling noise once again yesterday morning when I was quietly completing Streets Of Rage 2 for the millionth time in a moment of Sega Mega-Drive retrospective gaming. The pitter-patter of tiny feet, the scratching around above the ceiling. What could it be? Is it a mouse? Might I have to deal with yet another mouse invasion (remember the mouse living in my pile of ironing incident?) Or is it worse than that? They say in London you're never more than 10 yards from a rat, so could it be that? A rat?
So now I have to get into the loft somehow and hunt down the mystery noise-maker. I shall arm myself with a rolled-up newspaper, a penknife and a torch. I may or may not make it out alive.....

Hi Jac !
Are you still able to read any comments on your blog ? I mean , are you safe from your safari like expedition up there , on your loft ? Have you seen any wild animals :) or a gentle squirrel or "loir" (i can't find the translation sorry ! for that kind but quite noisy little furry animal we can find on such places sometimes ?) .
Well, you do know now that everywhere and not even in the country, you can find some "frantic scramblings" too !!! Ants by millions, mice too or rats as you mentioned ....
Anyway ,it could be interesting for us to know the end of that story you know ? You're still an excellent thriller story teller ! you could write excellent scenarii and scripts for some movies ...
Take care ....of the impropable above visitor

It may be pigeons in the eaves, i had that problem in my last house... The sound from them carries through the loft, giving the impression that they are actually 'inside' your house, when in actual fact they are merely nesting on the outside.... Have a look, you may be surprised!

Hi Steph! I am still alive, but I have not yet plucked up the courage to discover what beast awaits me in the loft. I think I shall need a few lagers first! I will, of course, update the website as soon as I have returned from my dangerous mission. Provided my arms haven't been chewed off by rabid rats...

Shifty, I am shocked. Not one spelling mistake!

Lagers first i wouldn't mind too ! but do take and bring with you also a bottle of some pure malt whisky too, so if any chewed off parts of your "integrity" would be threaten by these creatures ...you could clean the injured part (i reckon it could hurt at first but have a glass each time , after sometimes , you could find it harmless i suppose .
Yes your arms are to be protected but with the smell of a pure malt beverage on your body, i think you should be ok :)
let us know when that expedition is scheduled please ....in order for your friends to pray and sing some old "cantiques " on that occasion...
Sois prudent n'est ce pas Jac ?

UPDATE: the scrabbling noise seems to have disappeared for now, so I haven't ventured into the loft (scared). But if it does come back, I'll be waiting...
