STEVE BUTCHER'S BIRTHDAY

If you translated my boss's name into English, you'd get Steve Butcher which is far less exotic than his true French equivalent. Anyway, he is completely inept at his job, has no respect from anyone and is, frankly, useless.

Last Friday was his birthday and, as is customary in our department, we all gathered around in a meeting room for a piece of cake and a bout of Happy Birthday. I wasn't in the best of moods, but it was Friday so I was kind of excitable. This was not a good combination.

After the team's awful attempt at singing a rendition of Happy Birthday and actually trying to mean it, I decided that leading them into a chorus of a somewhat sarcastic 'For He's A Jolly Good Fellow' was in order. Two minutes later, he had opened his card and looked somewhat bemused at the cartoon charcter on the front.

"Eez Seempson, no?" he questioned as he began to look inside. Before I realised I'd said it, and a bit too loudly for the people next to me who were getting edgy at my bolshiness, the words "no, it's a muppet" flew out of my mouth. I got a few stares from the rest of the team, but a smile from Butcher. I went back to my desk moments later in the knowledge that I'd insulted the boss without him understanding it. Marvellous.
