From the sublime to the ridiculous

POWER CUT

May 14th, 2007 Posted in Amusing Events

I got in from work. It had been another long and hard day, I was tired and a bit stressed. I stuck a pizza in the oven and settled in front of the TV while it cooked, looking forward to an episode of the X-Files scheduled to air just after my pizza was ready. Fantastic.

The pizza had had its twelve minutes so I retrieved it from the oven, grabbed a knife and fork, flicked the TV to the right channel for the X-Files and sat back in my chair. I took the first cut, slicing through the dough base and watching the heat rise and trail away. I raised the fork to my mouth as the TV announcer welcomed us to another hour of Mulder and Scully, I raised my eyes to the TV, just milliseconds away from clamping down my jaw on my pizza and whoomph. The power went off. I paused, the fork left hanging as I sat there in the dark.

Not wanting to let it go cold, I finished it off before checking all the fuses to try to ascertain what the problem was. I put a call in to the local electricity company and they confirmed that there was a problem at a local sub-station.

But I couldn’t do anything. No studying, no emails, no TV, nothing. Except one thing. Play my guitar. Which I did and it was fantastic. With no lights, my senses were focused on hearing and I suggest to any musician out there that next time you fancy a practice, turn off all the lights. It’s also very relaxing.

Anyway, after over an hour with the guitar, there was nothing else to do except go to bed. I brushed my teeth and got into bed. It hadn’t been a great day but I felt more relaxed after my guitar playing and as I lay there, I let out a sigh of comfort and relaxation. At that very moment, all the lights came back on, the TV started blaring, the alarm clock began flashing and I had to get up to turn them all off again. Annoying!
