IT’S BEEN A YEAR AND NOW IT’S BATH TIME
November 14th, 2004 Posted in UncategorizedExactly one year ago a group of us staggered into town dressed in silly hats and pre-Christmas gear for what was termed a ’silly hat party’. Amongst the dirty looks and the threats was a decision by Debs and I to start officially “going out” (God I feel fifteen again) and since then a whole year has passed. A WHOLE YEAR.
So, to celebrate, we organised to spend a weekend in the west country. Having travelled down to Bristol on Saturday morning, we wandered around town to do some early Christmas shopping, had a look at the Clifton Suspension Bridge and spent a lovely evening in the bars and a restaurant in Bristol city centre.
Today we headed off to the Roman town of Bath where, after a huge detour down some remote country tracks, we ambled around the historic centre (again looking in the shops for Christmas presents) and decided that a look at the Roman Baths would be a nice cultural thing to do. So we donned our headsets and ambled around the 2,000 year old baths, looking at the various mozaics, temples, the Caldarium and ending up standing by the drinking fountain where warm water from the natural spring is treated and put into glasses by a local man wearing a frilly shirt.
We ordered two glasses of the warm water and I immediately noted a slightly fishy smell. Debs turned her nose up at the taste and refused to drink any more, at which point we were left standing there, waiting for me to finish mine. “So, do you drink a lot of this while you’re working then?” a random couple asked the man in the frilly shirt as he handed over another two glasses. “Yeas, I’ve driunk two glarses arlready tuday” the man replied in the broadest Bristolian accent you can imagine. He then fidgeted a bit and went slightly hyperactive before wandering over to Debs and I, smiling and breaking out into his highly amusing impression of Scooby Doo, at which point I knew there must be something in the water and we walked out.
