From the sublime to the ridiculous

GREAT BRITISH CIRCUS

July 12th, 2004 Posted in Uncategorized

An English summer of never-ending rain and dark, gloomy clouds is upon us. On the other hand, camels live in the desert.

If I was reading this and not writing it, I too would think that these are two absolutely unrelated sentences and the author was completely and utterly bonklers, but speaking from today’s experience, I can assure you that they are not.

As I drove back from football, just short of half eight this evening, I noticed a huge tent surrounded by several strange-looking animals in one of the local fields, I was momentarily confused and thought my lack of fitness had caused hallucinations.

But no, the strange-looking animals were (you’ve probably guessed it by now) camels grazing merrily in the damp pastures, recently drenched by yet another summer downpour and it was only when I saw an advertisement loosely tied to a gatepost by the side of the road that I finally registered the evidence before me.

Yes, the Great British Circus has arrived. But camels? British? Hmmm, just not cricket.

I have just read a good many of the archived events and am in complete stitches. Chicagos and the old birds, I am clearly having withdrawal symptoms. I haven’t seen a smashing blouse in the whole of NZ…

Speaking of out of place animals, did you know that Australia has the largest number in the world of wild donkeys? Strange but true…
