From the sublime to the ridiculous

SHOPPING TROLLEY

February 24th, 2004 Posted in Uncategorized

Debs and I went shopping at the enormous ASDA hypermarket in Watford on Sunday, I only wanted a few bits but she was off to get her weekly shop.

After bumbling around the aisles, avoiding the zig-zagging trolleys of bargain-crazed pensioners and getting lost a few times, we ended up at the check-out. The assistant whinged about how her colleagues never did any work so we smiled politely and headed for the door.

It was a windy day and damned cold. So cold in fact that we both stopped to do our overcoats right up and I kept one hand in a warm pocket whilst wheeling the trolley along the path towards Debs’ new car which was parked right across the other side of the sizeable car park.

The trolley weaved about due to the lack of steering power of one hand and Debs got so fed up of it she took control. The wind gusted once more and we found ourselves walking directly against it. There was a zebra crossing which we needed to use and I strode on ahead, the traffic stopping for me as I crossed.

When I got to the other side, I looked back to see Debs pushing the trolley with all her might but the wind was too strong for her and she could hardly push it across the road. The female driver of the car waiting at the crossing looked at me as if to say ‘well, are you going to help the poor little thing or not’, so I stood there, looked at my watch, folded my arms, rolled my eyes and impatiently tapped my foot.

The look on her face was priceless.

“Poorly prepared. More revision needed. Re-test Monday 14:30 in language lab.” How’s that?
