From the sublime to the ridiculous

THE LAKES

This weekend I went to Barrow-in-Furness in the Lake District with Debs for a reunion of her old university friends. What was on the agenda? Friday night was a medics party in the cricket club next to the hospital; Saturday was a walk in the countryside followed by a meal in town and then Sunday was the return journey with a pit stop to meet the in-laws.

So, the party on the Friday. I was fully expecting to see people in long white coats clutching forceps and sipping from test-tubes whilst a serious-looking man pored over a batch of bubbling beakers, his protective eyewear steaming up as the heat from a dozen bunsen burners warmed another round of sausage rolls. And all this while the stubborn cricketers that refused to fully relinquish their clubhouse discussed the umpiring history of Dickie Bird and practised their forward defensives on the dance floor. I have a strange imagination.

Anyway, none of that happened. Sadly. But I did meet Debbie’s old uni friends and get accosted by a something-or-other as I crossed the dancefloor in search of the toilets.

Saturday was extremely enjoyable as well. A three mile hike in the Grizedale Forest was in order before a pub lunch and a couple of hours kip to recuperate in time for heading off into town for yet more food and a few beers. The highlights of the evening would have to be: getting myself and others in trouble for looking at members of the opposite sex when girlfriends were present; walking into a bar that reminded me of the Titty Twister from the Tarantino film From Dusk Til Dawn; and watching the locals spit beer over each other.

Sunday was the drive home and my introduction to Debbie’s parents which, I am told, went very well indeed. I have been approved! Woo hoo!

So here I am, listening to Frank Sinatra and wondering where on Earth that nasal spray I bought has got to.
