SAFE YEAH
September 2nd, 2003 Posted in UncategorizedSo there I was, stood on the sidelines of the astroturf, having been temporarily replaced after my hat-trick in five-a-side football. I was pleased with the performance and was wearing my Jonola 14 Spurs shirt with pride.
“Hey Jonola” a voice cried from behind me, and I turned round to see a group of five or six young people - girls and boys- walking past with their BMXs, smoking. Before I could reply, one of the boys had said to me “safe, yeah?” and done one of those funny hand signal things, and one of the girls had added “got your number 118″.
Could somebody please explain to me what they mean? I don’t speak street.

I think “safe, yeah” may mean “well done”, as in “your side is safe because of you”. And “got your number 118″ is plainly out of those 118118 adverts,a nd the girl is plainly a fruitcake.

I don’t think they were Spurs supporters! What was the hand signal …… exactly?!?!?

it was one of those ‘backhand-facing, tuck the middle fingers in, stick the thumb, first finger and little finger out and waggle it’ sort of gestures. Any ideas?

No idea’s, sorry - but a distant memory of a first finger out and a waggle waggle brings me out in a very cold sweat!

A waggle waggle always gets me going in the mornings.

The waggly hand thing derives from the surf culture of the 60’s in California, it basically means nice one!
