FOOTBALL UPDATE
June 12th, 2002 Posted in UncategorizedIt’s been a great week for football. Not only have Ireland and England both qualified from their respective groups, but favourites Argentina and champions France both failed miserably in their quests for success. With reference to Argentina, there really isn’t anything quite like getting one over your arch rivals and as for France, well no true Englishman likes to see the French winning.
When the French went out, without scoring a single goal I might add, you could sense the glee and delight amongst the English people, and it was well summed up by the match commentator who came out with a highly amusing quote…..
“the French are the first world cup holders in the history of the competition not to qualify for the second round” he happily pointed out. Amusingly he then added “it’s ‘au revoir les bleus’….. ‘Quel dommage’“, which translates as ‘the blues are out’….. ‘Shame’.
Corking.
